Choosing safe and natural skin care products can be tough.   It isn’t that manufacturers don’t “claim” to produce them.  It’s just that they are not always honest.

Safety is in truth the big issue here.  Like most people, you want naturally occurring compounds, because you believe they are safer than synthetic compounds.   In many cases, you are correct.   But, there are a few exceptions.

Mercury, cadmium, lead and other heavy metals are found in nature.   While they might not be listed as ingredients in your favourite skin care products, they can be present as contaminants in natural plant extracts.

1000′s of contaminants are present in tap water, which is why water must be purified before it is used in skin care products.   Purified water does not occur in nature.   You can see the contradictions and the confusion.

We should be able to believe in the producer’s ability to create the safest all natural skin care creams.   How can you find a company worthy of your trust?

Look for a proud signer of the “Compact for Safe Cosmetics”.  Companies signing the compact agree to follow the EU’s higher standards for cosmetic ingredients.  Large companies were given the chance to sign.  Not one has agreed to sign.

The European Union has tightly regulated or banned thousands of compounds, because they are known to lead to birth defects, cancer or hereditary mutations.  The US has restricted only a few ingredients.

The most up to date report from the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is warning against the use of perfumes & fragrances.   Whether chemical or naturally occurring, fragrances can trigger asthma attacks, allergic reactions, headaches and shortness of breath.   They are also common allergens.

By law, cosmetic producers are not allowed to sell any product that can cause trauma to the wellness of the user.  But, there is no requirement to prove the safety of the ingredients they use.   Any company that uses chemical preservatives is actually breaking the law, because they are known to cause allergic reactions.  That is injurious to the health of the user.

As you continue your search for anti aging skin care products, remember to look for companies that have signed the compact.   That way, you’ll be safe.
